How do I decipher different HL on an audiogram??
Solution
\"HL\" means hearing levels. These are measured in decibels (dB) via an audiogram.
Tones between 250 and 8000Hz are measured via an audiogram. Both left and right ear of a person are checked. If a person can hear a sound between -10 and +20dB, then his ears are considered normal. No hearing loss is there.
Now, if the quietest sound a person can hear, is above +20dB, it means that the person is suffering from hearing loss. If a person hears a sound only if given a sound of atleast +30 to 40dB; then it means that \"mild hearing level\" is there.
If a person cannot hear, 40 decibel sound also, this means that moderate hearing loss is there. Now, it is measured exactly what sound this person hears. If it comes up to 55dB, then the effect is \"moderate\".
Still, if a person is unable to hear 55dB sound also, it means that hearing loss is \"moderately severe\". This range occurs till 70dB.
The effect is referred as \"severe HL\" between 70 to 90 decibels.
If a person is not able to hear 90 decibels also, it means that \"profound HL\" is there. This person is still able to hear, if given a sound of 110 decibels.
In this way, audiogram deciphers different HL.
