Ans. Disinfection may be defined as process of destruction of harmful microorganisms and bacteria. Chemical disinfection includes addition of disinfectants such as chemicals . Clorination is widely used method for chemical disinfection.
Advantages
- control of diseases by killing harmful micro-organisms.
- residual amount of some disinfectants deals with future contamination such as chlorine.
- also oxidises remaining organic matter and hence water is free from organic matter as well as bacterial growth is controlled
- Noxious odours can be removed using chlorination.
Disadvantages
- these are generally from halogen group and large amount of these compounds may be harmful or toxic for humans.
- some disinfectant such as ozone may help in corrosion of pipe. so special pipe material has to be used.
- this whole process comes to be very costly.
- Long term effects of releasing disinfected effluents are yet to be known . so , a little uncertainty here.
