Consider the line y = 7x - 3. Find the equation of the line that is parallel to this line and passes through the point (- 8, 3). Find the equation of the line that is perpendicular to this line and passes through the point (-8, 3). Note that the ALEKS graphing calculator may be helpful in checking your answer. Equation of parallel line: Equation of perpendicular line:

Solution

given equation of line y=7x-3

slope=7

1) The equation of line parallel to y= 7x-3 and passing through (a,b) is y-b=7(x-a)

here (a,b)=(-8,3)

y-3= 7(x+8)

y= 7x+53

2) req slope = -(1/7)

eqaution having slope -1/7 and passing through (-8,3) is

y-3= -1/7(x+8)

7y-21= -x-8

x+7y-13=0
