Problem 49 (college algebra). Please show your work.

Solve the equation. |6x + 5| = 6 (Use a comma to separate answers as needed. Type N if there is no real solution.)

Solution

If mod ( 6x + 5) = 6 , then 6x + 5 = ± 6 or, 6x = - 5 ± 6 so that x = 1/6(  - 5 ± 6 ) . Thus x = 1/6( - 5 + 6) = 1/6 or x = 1/6 ( -5 -6) i.e. x = - 11/6. The solution is x = 1/6 or x = - 11/6 which can be written as x = 1/6 , - 11/6
