A variety of single nucleotide polymorphisms SNPs were studi
A variety of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were studied in US cattle, to determine their effects on the range of fatty acids produced in each strain. Shown below are the data for a range of SNPs found in fatty acid syntheses (FASN). Based on the fatty acids produced, what domain(s) or activities do you predict are affected in the various genetic genotypes? (note that the c & t in the lipid names refer to cis and trans, MUFA=a mix of mono-unsaturated fatty acids) FASN, fatty acid syntheses, SNP, single nucleotide polymorphism. Midpoint P
Solution
Answer:
Signicant additive and/or dominance effects between the FASN SNP were detected on:
1. Seven SFAs (10:0, 12:0,13:0, 14:0, 15:0, 18:0, 20:0)
2. One branched-chain fatty acid (iso17:0)
3. Six MUFAs (9c-14:1, 9c-15:1, 9c-16:1,11t-16:1, 12c-16:1, 9c-18:1)
4. One c/t-diene (9c,13t/8t,12c-18:2) and a single PUFA (20:3n-6)
The AA genotype of the FASN SNP was significantly associated with higher concentrations of the SFAs including 10:0, 12:0, 13:0, 14:0 and 15:0, lower concentrations of the unsaturated fatty acids of 9c-18:1 and 20:3n-6, and higher concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids including 9c-14:1 and 12c-16:1, in comparison with the GG genotype (P <0.05).
