How does membrane treatment work? What types of membrane will removal salinity?

Solution

Membranes are the thin and the porous sheets which is used to remove the contamination and salination from the water, may it be the drinking water or the waste water, with the help of the thin pores it can remove the bacterias and the microorganisms, particulate materials, oragnis matters and the small pollutants, which can reacts to the minerals present in the water and can cause problems like colour, odour, and may leads to the diseases like cancer. But one of the major drawbacks of the system is that it degrades over the time and the efficiency of the sytem reduces and if the foul membrane is continued to work with, it will advesly effect the quality of the water and in tern the health of the human beings.

Fouling are of two types reversible and irreversible fouling based on the attachment strength of particles to the membrane surface. Reversible fouling can be removed by a strong shear force of backwashing. Proper vigilance is to kept on the filter membranes so that the reversible fouling cannot be converted to irrereversible fouling.Formation of a strong matrix of fouling layer with the solute during a continuous filtration process will result in reversible fouling being transformed into an irreversible fouling layer. Irreversible fouling is the strong attachment of particles, which cannot be removed by physical cleaning and have to be done with the help of certain chemicals.

For the removal of the salinity membrane of organic synthetic polymer can be ued.eg-polysulfone
